Why this scam works
Fear of losing files makes people grant remote access. Once attached, scammers can steal accounts or charge “repair” fees.
Signs it’s fake
- Unsolicited virus pop-ups with a phone number
- Cold calls claiming Microsoft/Apple/Geek Squad
- Requests for TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or remote access
- Pressure to pay by gift card or wire
- Browser freezes that only the “agent” can unlock (they caused it)
What to do instead
- Force-quit the browser or power off if stuck; don’t call the number
- Never give remote access to a cold caller
- Run updates from official OS settings only
- Paste any SMS into ScamCheck; hang up on cold support calls
